Udawalawe Safari Jeep Tour – What to Expect

Udawalawe National Park stretches across 30,821 hectares of open savanna, thorn scrub, and reservoir shoreline in southern Sri Lanka. Unlike the dense forests of Yala, Udawalawe's wide grasslands make wildlife spotting exceptionally rewarding — especially for photographers and families.

The park is home to over 600 resident wild Asian elephants, one of the largest concentrations in the world. Herds of 20–100 elephants are a common sight, particularly around the Udawalawe Reservoir. Baby elephants playing in the shallows are a highlight guests never forget. Beyond elephants, expect water buffalo, crocodiles, wild boar, spotted deer, and an extraordinary diversity of birdlife including peacocks, painted storks, and eagles.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an Udawalawe safari cost?

Udawalawe safari cost depends on the number of passengers per jeep. Private safari jeep prices start from USD 90 per jeep and increase based on group size. All park entrance fees, jeep hire, and hotel transfers are included.

What is the best time for Udawalawe safari?

Udawalawe is excellent year-round because elephants are resident and do not migrate. Morning and late afternoon safaris offer the best sightings as herds gather near the reservoir. The dry months (May–September) concentrate wildlife near water sources.

Will I definitely see elephants?

Udawalawe has over 600 resident wild elephants, making sightings virtually guaranteed. Most visitors see herds of 20–100 elephants, including babies. It is one of the most reliable elephant-watching destinations in Asia.

Can we combine Udawalawe with Yala?

Yes — many guests do a 2-day itinerary covering both parks. Udawalawe is best for elephants and Yala for leopards. Our chauffeur drives between parks and arranges both safaris for a complete wildlife experience.

Is Udawalawe safari suitable for families with children?

Absolutely. The open grasslands make elephant spotting easy even for young children, and private jeeps (max 6 guests) provide a comfortable family experience. The nearby Elephant Transit Home is a great add-on for kids.

What is the Elephant Transit Home?

The Elephant Transit Home is a rehabilitation centre near the park entrance that cares for orphaned and injured elephant calves. Feeding times are open to visitors — a wonderful 30-minute stop before or after your safari.
